Grey Sweater of Doom - Qualified Perceptions

Grey Sweater of Doom
Hooray! The Grey Sweater of Doom for mjperson is finished! It feels like it's been in progress for forever, and it's dense enough (size 2 needles) that it probably has more yardage of yarn than anything I've previously made. I finished the collar at the run tonight, and twe was nice enough to take pictures. I've been calling it the grey sweater, but it's really an odd shade somewhere between brown and tan. "Taupe", I suppose, which is probably the second most unattractive-sounding color name ever, behind "puce".
My interesting lesson for this sweater was cabling without a cable needle (there's a nice tutorial here). I was pretty dubious to start with, but by the time I finished, it really was a lot faster. And since I seem to lose cable needles left and right, being able to do without is a nice bonus.

Third worst

I think "taupe" also sounds better than "chartreuse!"

Re: Third worst

Chartreuse sounds to me like a dark smoky grey, with maybe a hint of red. It'd be a much better word if that was its actual color. :)

Wow, that came out nice! It looks rich. I think it's the fine grain of the patterns. (You can tell I don't know any real knitting words here. :-)

While I agree with you 100% on puce, I rather like taupe.

That's quite the impressive tangle of cables!

Very nice. You have been working on it a long time.

I always expect "puce" to be the color of pumice.

I learned to cable without a cable needle because I didn't have one and didn't know they existed! I thought I was so smart when I finally figured out there was a tool I could be using instead of squeezing the stiches with one finger and hoping for the best :).

I always did the "hold onto the stitches and hope for the best" in a pinch, too. The new technique works a bit better than that, because 1) the stitches are the just-knit ones, so they're under less tension than the previous row, and 2) they hang in the air for only an instant, not the whole time you're knitting the other stitches.

looks like a taupe version of my fav whitish one

that you made for me years ago. It is more of a 'mayonaise' color, or 'cream'. I think it has been washed on the regular cycle more than 150 times over the years, and it still looks great.

That's the sweater I tried to make a second copy of, and where the first copy stretches in the wash, the second one shrinks in the wash? That really confused me. :)
