Octopus Wars - Qualified Perceptions
Octopus Wars
Okay, after some encouragement by mjperson and shumashi, there is a new plan for octopuses:

Octopus Wars!

Anyone who wants to play gets an octopus (this may take a little while). Your octopuses will compete in a variety of amusing tasks designed by mjperson (rules coming soon), either in teams or solo. (Sort of like SF0, but easier and designed for octopi.). Prizes will be awarded.

(Feel free to pass this along to people not on livejournal.)

(Also, nuclearpolymer, as the previous First Octopus Responder, gets an octopus even if she doesn't want to play, but she seems pretty close to the target audience for Octopus Wars...)

Current Mood: amused amused

I want to do this!

Can I play? Even though I'll be long-distance? I can make my own octopus. Although, I'll probably end up having to make at least three before I get one to call my own...

Yup! Remote players are welcome! (And family teams!)
If you want to make your own octopus, that's fine, but I'm also happy to mail them to faraway players. :)

I want to join in octopus games!

Oooh! Can I be another remote player?

Yup! :)

I don't really need an octopus, but can my current octopus play? :)
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 11th, 2008 06:55 pm (UTC) (Link)
After referring the question to the rules committee, the answer is Yes, your current octopus can play. (It can even have an octopus if it wants, though that's getting strangely recursive).
desireearmfeldt From: desireearmfeldt Date: March 11th, 2008 07:07 pm (UTC) (Link)
That would be funny, but I don't think my octopus actually needs an octopus. :)
ricedog From: ricedog Date: March 11th, 2008 08:48 pm (UTC) (Link)
My octopus already has an octopus (or, my octopi have each other). Can we play?
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 11th, 2008 08:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Ooh, they might be the first pre-formed team!
jdbakermn From: jdbakermn Date: March 11th, 2008 06:48 pm (UTC) (Link)

Me too!

Sounds like fun, and since you are supporting remote players... :)

I am a little afraid of what mjperson might have in store for us, but I'm up to it!

I'm interested!

Ooh! Me too! I will join in the War of the Octopi!

Cephalopod combat? Sign me up!
nuclearpolymer From: nuclearpolymer Date: March 11th, 2008 08:33 pm (UTC) (Link)
Wow, I get an octopus AND a war? Excellent!
eowyns From: eowyns Date: March 11th, 2008 09:11 pm (UTC) (Link)
If there's still spots for long-distance players I'd also love to play!
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 11th, 2008 09:21 pm (UTC) (Link)
Sure! :)

(Not having seen the rules yet, I don't think there's a big difference between long-distance players and nearby players except that the long-distance players who aren't near anyone else might have to use more photoshop for team entries. :) )

Ooh, me, especially if I can have a green one!

Hmm... I don't think I want to play, but I am pretty swift with the crochet hook. If you get me a copy of the pattern you can offload some octopi production to me.
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 12th, 2008 04:26 am (UTC) (Link)
Yay, backup octopus production, thank you! I've put a copy of the pattern here
remcat From: remcat Date: March 11th, 2008 11:53 pm (UTC) (Link)
Me me! I can help make octi or make my own, if provided with pattern.
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 12th, 2008 04:27 am (UTC) (Link)
I've downloaded a copy of the pattern here. (Commenting for everyone who asked, on the theory that maybe not everyone else reads all the comments. :) )
pekmez From: pekmez Date: March 11th, 2008 11:57 pm (UTC) (Link)
I want to play! We have other different looking octopi who could serve as placeholders, one of whom is close to the same size as I am guessing these are (about a tennis ball for a head and little stubby feet.)
kelkyag From: kelkyag Date: March 12th, 2008 02:01 am (UTC) (Link)
I'm interested. I could either make my own octopus or play with an existing one. Will this be designed specifically for stuffed toy octopi?
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 12th, 2008 04:30 am (UTC) (Link)
Well, the rules aren't all sorted out yet, but stuffed toy octopi are the archetype. (Live octopi, for example, might object to some of the challenges. :) )
kelkyag From: kelkyag Date: March 12th, 2008 07:25 am (UTC) (Link)
I should have a braided octopus that I made a long time ago, who may have unfair advantages and/or disadvantages by virtue of having different proportions. There's also the wooden octopus magnet ...

Octopus Wars...woohoo! I'm interested. :)

Also, for reference, after some discussion with an anonymous party, we have determined that the plural of "octopus" should be "octopodes" (pronounced as four syllables, with a non-silent 'e') and not the abominable "octopi." We are willing to fight to the death over this.

"We're trying to figure out which is right: 'Oo, an octopus *has* got me' or 'Oo, an octopus *done* got me.'"

"I would say...um...[looks over there and sees a guy with an octopus on his head running in panic] An octopus done got ALBERT!!!'"

"That would be safer...or more generous."

"But *still* ungrammathematical."

Huh... That sure is a cute octopus. I'm not sure I want to get involved since I have no idea what the rules are like (nor what SF0 is like). But I'll be following your progress. :-)

Me, me. I wanna play!
I keep forgetting to post this when I am sitting at a computer with an actual keyboard.

So can the kiddies play? I think S. would be quite amused. You need to make mini octopi for them?

I will take a look at the pattern, but i don't have much crochet experience where the yarn actually shows. (just the beads) And I am woefully under supplied with time.
firstfrost From: firstfrost Date: March 15th, 2008 02:12 am (UTC) (Link)

Re: Octopi

Kids can play too! When mjperson finishes the rules, you and they and we can figure out if you want to run one octopus together, or have one each. (Or have one octopus with baby octopuses that count game-wise as one. :) )

That was me, it seems I wasn't logged in on this computer!

There should be a squid team endeavoring to foil the octopodes at every turn.

Kitty Squid
Felted Squid
Naughty Squiddy
