knitting timeline - Qualified Perceptions
knitting timeline
twe recruited me to http://www.ravelry.com recently; it's for, um, "fiber arts" (mostly knitting, also crochet and yarn spinning/dying). You get to organize your completed and in-progress projects, with pictures, and there's pictures of your stashed yarn, and everything is very cross-linkified so you can go see pictures of other people's versions of the same patterns, or what other people did with that same yarn, and so on. (Edit: Yes, I know it's not very friendly for people who aren't members, and what with the waiting list, becoming a member takes a while...)

On the one hand, it's nice to see all my projects a bit more coherently organized, and to get to look at variants, and get inspiration. I have a lot of finished projects, and that's not even including the ones that I failed to take pictures of, way back when.

On the other hand, it makes me way too aware of 1) how much yarn I have stashed that I'm probably never going to get to use (even after giving tons of it to kelkyag!), 2) how much really beautiful yarn there is that I haven't bought any of (leading to more twe-induced temptations. My arm was twisted! Twisted, I say!), and 3) how long it would take to make everything I want to. I need to invest in a knitting-specific timeline.

On the third hand, which would actually be pretty convenient for knitting, it makes organizing notes for things that people wanted made for them a lot easier. Bag for chenoameg, check, unless someone else produces one first. Sweater for shumashi, check. Hat and scarf for ilhander, check. Knuckle gloves for rifmeister, squid hat for arcanology, and so on. While I'm tracking things, does anyone else either think I promised them something I've forgotten, or want something (admittedly off in "who knows when" territory)? :)

Say, weren't you going to be knitting a scale map of Somerville...? :)

I'm pretty sure that one wasn't on the list already...
(but that's more like a google sketchup project anyway, which I was looking for an excuse to do something in...!)

I'm on the wait list :).

Yeah, you were supposed to knit me a Jeffersonian democracy, and then a molecular phylogenetic cladogram for all known bacteria species.

Hey, now! Arm twisting? "I'm thinking of getting one of these, but I can't make up my mind which one..." "Ooh, those are tempting."

There was that green yarn that I thought would make good socks that you didn't. On the other hand, if you think it would be no fun to knit with, I could try to learn this knitting stuff ...

Also, what am *I* going to do with all this yarn? Aiee!

Oops, right, I forgot the kelkyag socks out of the Scratchy Shetland Wool. I still think you're mad, but I'll put those on the queue (with the Jeffersonian democracy and the scale map of Somerville, which is more surreality than I expect from at least one of those two people...)

Oops, the shetland wool is actually only about one sock of yarn; I could make you One Sock, or I could do a two-color sock with the dark green and something else (maybe green and white...)

Green and black or grey? Or I could trade you something less scratchy for it, and try making my first sock.

It's a dark enough green that I think it wouldn't show up well against black, at least, not for a pattern with a design of any sort. It might go okay with grey. Really, I should just give it to you and let you do something with it, as I'm clearly unreasonably biased against the darn thing. :)

Totally your call! I will happily take up an excuse to go yarn shopping.

(Though knowing me I'll promptly select something else completely unsuitable for socks.)
