Brown Projects - Qualified Perceptions
Brown Projects
This pair of socks is the first time I've tried to knit socks two at a time. I learned many things. First, no matter how tempting it is to use both ends of the center-pull ball, this is probably a bad idea. It's very hard to get extra twist out when you can't just spin something around the twisted yarn. Second, sock patterns which require moving the start point are probably not the best patterns to try two-at-a-time with, because instead of just moving stitches from one needle to the next, you have to put them on a holder and wait for the "next" needle to come around a whole sock later. Third, I really do like the timing of two-at-a-time better. There is no having to make notes about how many cuff stitches was an inch and a half, or trying to remember if you picked up at the very top of the heel flap or only at the first full selvedge stitch, or exactly how far before starting the toe. And there's no ``okay, now I have to do a whole stupid second sock'' step. Fourth, picking up the sides of two heel flaps was not as pesky as I worried it would be. I will have to try this again.

The other day, remcat mentioned starting a knit-toy mystery knitalong. (For non-knitters, that's when a pattern designer releases a pattern a little bit at a time, and a bunch of people knit it ~together (as together as people can be over the internet. Well, no, less together than that. How about "at the same time and with some picture sharing"?)). I clicked on her links, and the designer had made a bunch of cute animals, especially the really cute baby bunny. So I decided I would knit along too. I cast on, and did the first clue, and decided it was probably going to be a teddy bear. This was a little disappointing, because teddy bears aren't nearly as cute as baby bunnies. So then I was sort of noodling around wondering if it was worth it to keep going, if it wasn't going to be as cute as the bunny. Then I realized that there was a solution to this dilemma, and I made the bunny instead.

Ooof, yes, not needing to make notes about every fiddly detail along the way is very nice.

Pretty socks! And cute bunny. (But I think teddy bears can be darn cute, too.)

The socks are lovely, but I'm mostly here to squee at the bunny. <3
